West Portal takes its name from the Western Terminus of the Muni Tunnel beneath Twin Peaks. It used to be sand dunes and vegetable farms which later on was developed into a commercial and residential district in 1918.

It has the elements of a small town not only because of its size but also because not much has changed over the years.
The heart of this “small town” is its shopping district about 3 blocks long. If you will visit the place and ask the business owners, you will discover that the majority of the shops have been there for decades. These mom and pop stores add to the unique charm of the place.
